Hakai Pass and the Hakai Lúxvbálís Conservancy are located 130 km north of Port Hardy and 115 km southwest of Bella Coola. “Hakai” means “wide passage” in the Heiltsuk language.

The Hakai Lúxvbálís Conservancy was established on May 23, 2008 through a joint agreement between the Heiltsuk Nation and the Province of British Columbia. At 122 988 hectares, the conservancy is the largest protected marine area on the B.C. coast. The conservancy is comprised of an archipelago of islands south of Bella Bella that includes Calvert Island, Hecate Island and Hunter Island.

Over 130 archaeological sites fall within the area of the conservancy. They include fish traps, middens, winter village sites and pictographs.

The area is renowned worldwide for its salmon fishing. Geography in the region includes white sandy beaches, picturesque coves and inlets and a wide variety of marine and terrestrial animal life.

Calvert Island Conservancy

The Calvert Island Conservancy is connected to the Hakai Lúxvbálís Conservancy and protects southern Calvert Island.

The Calvert Island Conservancy was established July 13, 2006 and is co-managed by the Wuikinuxv First Nation and the Province of British Columbia.

Calvert Island is considered one of the finest scuba diving and snorkelling destinations in the world. The area is also an excellent area for experience sea kayakers. The island is also home to the Hakai Institute’s Calvert Island Ecological Observatory.

Hakai Pass can only be reached by private boat or float plane. Pacific Coastal’s Wilderness Seaplanes (see Zone 3) offers departures from Port Hardy to the Hakai Beach Institute, Hakai Land and Sea, Joe’s Salmon Lodge, Ole’s Hakai Pass Fishing Lodge, Hakai Lodge and Doc Creek.
