Ocean Falls is located within Heiltsuk Nation territory. The Heiltsuk people have lived on this land for over 9000 years.
In 1906, the company Crown Zellerbach financed the construction of the company town called Ocean Falls. In 1909, a sawmill was established. A pulp and paper mill became operational in 1912, and closed in 1973. Most Ocean Falls residents had left the community by 1980.
In full productivity, 4000 people lived in Ocean Falls. The town had a school, a hospital, a large swimming pool and a large hotel. Now the community is nearly abandoned.
Ocean Falls is reputed as one of the rainiest locations in Canada, with an average of 4390 millimeters (172.8 inches) of rain per year.
Ocean Falls can be accessed by floatplane, private boat or BC Ferries. The BC Ferries vessel departs from Bella Coola and takes ten hours and ten minutes, with stops at Bella Bella and Shearwater.
